INDYCAR - 110th Running of the Indianapolis 500
110th Running of the Indianapolis 500x
Speedway, IN – May 24, 2026
JOSEF NEWGARDEN No. 2 ASTEMO CHEVROLET
Start: 23rd, Finish: 28th
RACE RUNDOWN: osef Newgarden and the No. 2 Shell Fuel Rewards Chevrolet team finished 28th in Sunday's Indianapolis 500 after a strong run was halted prematurely by a hard crash on Lap 127 of the 200-lap event. A two-time winner of the race, Newgarden rolled off from the 23rd starting position, but he would not remain there long. When the first caution flag of the day flew on Lap 18, Newgarden had powered his way to the 16th position and picked up two more spots on the ensuing pit stop to restart 14th on Lap 28. He worked his way inside the top 10 following the second caution of the day and became a fixture inside the top five following the team's second pit stop on Lap 62. Rain began to become a nuisance as the second half of the race began with two race stoppages on Lap 101 and Lap 116. On the Lap 127 restart, Newgarden ran solidly in the fourth position when he placed his Chevy machine too low in Turn 4, resulting in a spin and heavy contact with the outside wall that put them out of the event.
NEWGARDEN'S THOUGHTS: "We were going for it. Obviously, we didn’t know how the weather was going to affect the second half of the race. It looked like there could be heavy rain before the end of it and I wanted to put us in the best possible position no matter how it finished. The Shell Fuel Rewards Chevy was a work in progress for much of the first half, but it was starting to come to us. Just hate that we couldn’t finish it off.”
